Am I Ready to Become a Foster Parent

This questionnaire will help you determine if you are eligible and ready to become a foster/adoptive parent. Circle true or false, for each statement below. If you answer "true" to all of the statements, you are ready to begin the process of becoming a foster/adoptive parent! T / F: I am Ready to Have a Safety Inspection Done on My Home Now

It is important to live in a safe environment. During the home study process, your certifier will conduct a safety inspection of your home. Your home must be free of danger and garbage. You must have working smoke detectors in every room a foster child would sleep in and on every level of your home. You must also have a working fire extinguisher with a minimum classification 2A: 10BC.

T / F: There is Room in My Home for a Foster Child

Children will need their own bed and adequate space to meet their needs. A foster child may share a bedroom with another same sex child within a certain age range.

T / F: I am in Good Emotional, Physical and Mental Health

Being a parent can be demanding! You must be health and emotionally stable to care for foster children.

T / F: All Adults in My Home are Willing to Particitpate in a Criminal History Check

Certain criminal offenses automatically exclude an individual from becoming a foster parent.

T / F: I Can Support Relationships Between Children and Their Families and Work as a Member of a Team

Foster parents are a member of the team in working with the child and his/her parents. On some cases, where appropriate, foster parents and biological parents are encouraged to participate in some for of communication in the best interest of the children.

If you have had an open social services case in the past, you may not be able to become a foster parent. This includes substantiated cases of abuse or neglect or if your own child was placed in foster care or adopted.

You are ready to begin in your life is stable, meaning you are not in the process of moving and you don’t have financial, emotional or relationship difficulties. Training includes one Orientation class and seven weeks of pre-service training.
